The Brooklyn Blogfest was a resounding success, with the 100 capacity room at the Stone House overfull. Apparently, latecomers were not admitted, much to the irritation of at least one commentator on Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn.
Louise Crawford of OTBKB opened the session after Hugh Crawford showed a slide show of his "No Words_Daily Pix" photos which appear on OTBKB (with almost no words of exposition.) Having warned the speakers of the strict 5 minute time limit, Crawford drew a big laugh when she tapped speaker Rolley on the shoulder with a broom after she ignored the tinkling bell which signaled the end of her time. Other speakers toed the line...
Bloggers who spoke were Steve Johnson, Outside,in, Lumi Rolley of No Land Grab, Jon Butler, Brownstoner, Norman Oder of Atlantic Yards Report, Robert Guskind, Gowanus Lounge and Eleanor Traubman of Creative Times. The open mike after them let about a dozen people introduce themselves and their blogs.
The impact of blogging was discussed by more than one speaker. The lack of local coverage by NY newspapers was also a hot topic...blogging filled the gaps and gave voice to local issues (particularly on the Atlantic Yards project, which the New York Times had covered poorly.) Oder said that "the journalism of verification" exactly describes what he does in his AY Report, contradicting Times editor Bill Keller who insinuated that blogging cannot.
After the formalities, margaritas and food were available to round out a great evening.
Future projects wont run out of ideas.
